Justice for Philando Castile Allies Blockade I-35W Bridge

Minneapolis, MN – Just before 8 a.m. on July 13th, protesters marched onto I-35W southbound from southeast Minneapolis and blocked morning rush hour traffic. This protest was led by self described “white and non-black POC” allies who generally declined to comment to media about the action.

State troopers started arresting protesters around 9:10 a.m. 41 arrests were made.

Unicorn Riot was live for the entirety of the action:

About a mile from the I-35 shutdown, protesters from the Wake Your Ass Up Collective gathered at the People’s Plaza area around the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis demanding to “Disarm, Defund, Disband, Demilitarize” the police.

We were live for this event as well.

This public rally served as a decoy to bring attention away from the secretly planned I-35 shutdown. They marched to the Star Tribune building and in the lobby, the group of over 50 allies demanded to know if the Star Tribune work for the people or the police:

The Twin Cities area has been rocked with protests from high-profile police killings of Black men, Jamar Clark and Philando Castile.

Philando Castile was murdered by Jeronimo Yanez, a St. Anthony police officer, in Falcon Heights on Wednesday July 6th, 2016. Protests have been ongoing since, with an occupation of the front sidewalk and street of Minnesota governor Mark Dayton’s mansion on Summit Ave. in St. Paul.
